21 Secret Uses For Vaseline
What Is Vaseline?
If you’re like me, you probably wondered at least once ‘what is Vaseline actually?’
Before we get to the beautiful Vaseline uses, let’s get to know about Vaseline 😉
History of Vaseline
Vaseline has a long history – over 150 years.
Protecting everyone’s skin from soldiers on battlefields to babies.
History of (Genius) Vaseline
1859
– A 22-year-old chemist, Robert Chesebrough started research on the potential of the by-product of oil refinery as it had a great healing effect on wounded and burnt skin.
1865
– After many years of research, he perfected the unique distillation and purification process and applied for a patent
1870
– Started product demos in New York as Petroleum Jerry
1872
– Registered “Vaseline” as a trademark. Vaseline® Jelly was born!
Only in two years did it become a national brand (1 tin sold per minute) in the United States.
1920’s
– the original Vaseline® became a household staple. Various new products were created to meet the postwar economic boom.
1943
– During World War II, Vaseline® was an important item for the US military – Vaseline Petroleum Gauze Wrapper helped heal burns of wounded soldiers.
2005
– The original Vaseline® Skin Protecting Jelly became a global brand – 1 pot sold every 39 seconds somewhere in the world.
As of 2020, Vaseline® is loved by people all over the world – available in 79 countries.
Its body & hand care products also rank No.1 in 21 countries.
What Is Vaseline Made Of?
It is made of petroleum jelly.
Vaseline® Jelly is simply its trademark name – essentially the same thing.
It is produced through various processes of refinement and purification of rod wax (unrefined form of petroleum jelly).
Now you’re thinking – but petroleum jelly sounds a little scary…?!
Not to worry.
Petroleum jelly is triple-filtered – 100% purified.
(the founder Robert Chesebrough perfected the purification process in 1865)
It is free from impurities and totally safe.
Better yet, it’s no colour, no preservatives, no perfume.
For 150 years, originally called ‘Wonder Jelly’, Vaseline® Healing Jelly Original has helped heal dry skin across the globe.
How Does Vaseline Work?
This refined and purified transparent jelly acts like a protecting barrier on the skin.
It locks moisture in the skin – which helps moisturise, repair and relieve dryness.
It protects & repairs the skin.
On a side note, what’s amazing is it even protects leaves 🌿 from going dry!
Wow.
Simple, but very effective – that is the power of Vaseline® Jelly.
21 Vaseline Users for More Beautiful You
Vaseline® Jelly was born in the US, but has been loved for many decades in Japan 🇯🇵 too.
Here are popular uses of Vaseline by J-Beauty.
Vaseline Uses for SKINCARE
Suffering from dry skin?
Vaseline can come in handy when the skin feels dry.
(1) At the End of Your Skincare
Vaseline itself does not have a moisturising effect, but it creates a seal on the surface of the skin – which helps retain moisture in the skin.
(2) For Persisting Skin Trouble (Skin Fasting)
If you have persistent skin problems, skin fasting may be the solution. It’s like you detox to cleanse your body, but it’s for skin.
Many Japanese women incorporate skin fasting into their skincare routine. They periodically stop using their usual skincare products and switch to Vaseline!
Never tried before? Not to worry, it’s really simple.
J-Beauty Skin Fasting Trick
- Wash & cleanse your face normally.
- Apply a very small amount of Vaseline only.
- Repeat this for 5 – 7 days for best results.
- Go back to your usual skincare routine/products afterwards.
* You may feel it’s too simple but what your skin needs is exactly this – simple care. It helps the skin to restore its natural barrier and strength.
(3) Remove Blackheads
Ever experienced stubborn blackheads?
You keep getting them even if you are deep cleansing or using peel-off masks?
Most of the time, masks & scrubs only make it worse as they contain lots of chemicals which are harsh on the skin.
Vaseline, on the other hand, is actually much gentler and it can help remove blackheads more effectively.
How to Use Vaseline on Blackheads
- Prepare a steamed towel.
- Put it on the nose for about 5 minutes so the pores open up.
- Apply a layer of Vaseline and wrap it with cling film (saran wrap).
- Leave it overnight.
- Rinse it off gently with lukewarm water as soon as you wake up!
* When you repeat this for 2-3 days, you may see clean pores 😉
J-Beauty DIY trick – Vaseline® Scrub
You can also create your own scrub with Vaseline.
- Mix Vaseline, honey and sugar (ratio 1:1:2)
- Mix honey and sugar first, then add Vaseline.
- Apply it onto the nose and gently massage.
- Rinse with lukewarm water.
* It feels gentle on the skin – I love it personally!
Vaseline Uses for LIP CARE
Having trouble with chapped lips or dry lips?
Vaseline Jelly can help cure that!
(4) Lip Balm
Vaseline can be used as a lip balm – especially Vaseline® Lip Therapy®.
Try the J-Beauty way
- Take a rice grain size of Vaseline.
- Apply by gently going over the lip lines aka lip wrinkles (the little vertical lines that form on the lips).
* Do NOT rub as it damages the lips further.
(5) Lip Sheet Mask
Vaseline works wonders as a sheet mask for lips!
Try the J-Beauty way
- Apply Vaseline to the lips gently.
- Wrap the lips with a layer of cling film (saran wrap).
- Leave it for 3 minutes.
* For more plumped lips, put a steamed warm towel on top of the film. This even helps improve the colour tone of the lips too!
(6) Heal Cracked Corners of the Mouth
If you’re suffering from cracked corners of the mouth, do the following with Vaseline.
Try the J-Beauty way
- Rinse them well.
- Wipe off the water.
- Apply a small amount of Vaseline.
* Vaseline acts as a protector and will help prevent dryness and avoid the dryness worsening – leading to faster healing.
Vaseline Uses for MAKEUP
(7) Fix Makeup
Vaseline is so useful to fix makeup!
It WORKS well, especially on smudged eyeshadows and mascara.
Try the J-Beauty way
- Scoop a tiny amount of Vaseline with a cotton swab.
- Gently remove the smudged makeup.
*In your handbag 👜, carry a small ziplock bag with a few cotton swabs with Vaseline® on – you can fix your makeup as you go about your day too!
(8) Remove Makeup
It is important to be gentle when removing makeup, especially around the eyes and the lips – those areas are more delicate than the rest of the face.
Vaseline helps eyeshadows and lipsticks to come off easily without scrubbing the skin.
J-Beauty tip
Apply a bit of Vaseline on the eyes/lips – which helps dissolves makeup already before cleansing. Now, you can remove the makeup with little effort – more gentle, less damaging for the skin ♪.
(9) As a Lip Gloss
Vaseline can give a gorgeous GLOW to the lips!
How To Use
Apply it on top of your favourite lipstick – to turn it into a shiny lip gloss. Since Vaseline® is transparent, the original colour of the lips stick remains too.
(10) Matte Lipstick → Lip Gloss
Turn your favourite matte lipstick into lip gloss!
How To Turn Lipstick Into Lip Gloss
Simply add a layer of Vaseline on top of your favourite matte lipstick 💄- voila! Now, you have sensual, sexy shiny lips.
* It is money-saving not having to buy a new lip gloss also!
Vaseline Uses for BODY
Vaseline can be used even as hand cream especially when your hands feel dry. It works really well even if you’re suffering from hangnail (caused by the dry skin).
The key is to apply a small amount of Vaseline and spread gently thinly ♪.
(11) Hand Care
Your hands may feel itchy and turn red from dry seasons or when you’re suffering with dishpan hands. Use Vaseline to moisturise and heal the skin.
J-Beauty Tip
- Apply a normal hand cream first to moisturise.
- Then apply a small amount of Vaseline – acts as a protective barrier from dryness.
* If it feels a little sticky afterwards, lightly press it with some tissue.
(12) Nail Care
It works perfect on hangnails and cuticles. It keeps them soft and prevents them from hardening.
(13) Body Care (Elbow, Knees, Heels)
Hard skin on elbows, knees and heels?
These areas can still feel hard even after moisturising, but there’s a moisturising trick that works like a charm!
J-Beauty Tip
- Soften the hardened areas first with Vaseline.
- Then apply your normal body cream.
Vaseline Uses for EYELASHES, EYEBROWS
(14) Help Grow Eyelashes
Really? I know… but Japanese women have been raving about how Vaseline® actually helped grow eyelashes.
Here’s how they do it:
Try the J-Beauty Way
- Warm some Vaseline up in your hands.
- Scoop the warmed up Vaseline with a cotton swab.
- Gently stroke the eyelashes with it.
Vaseline works to prevent dryness and moisturise the lashes. It also protects from external stimuli like dust.
When the lashes are protected and moisturised, it is easier to grow healthier lashes. Some say their lashes got firmer and longer too!
*It WORKS particularly well for damaged lashes from extensions, heavy use of mascara.
(15) Shape & Groom Your Eyebrows
Use Vaseline as a clear brow gel for a natural & effortless look!
You can shape your brows exactly the way you want with Vaseline®.
How To Shape/Groom Eyebrows
- Warm some Vaseline up.
- Apply it with a spoolie brush (disposable ones are best).
- Groom & shape your eyebrows as usual.

- Gently massage it into hair and blow dry.
*You can mix Vaseline with your favourite hair cream or treatment too.
Vaseline Uses for PERFUME

That’s right 🙂 You can make your perfume last longer.
Here’s How to do it
- Apply a small amount of Vaseline where you normally spray perfume. (I recommend – inner wrists, behind ear lobes, in the cleavage).

Vaseline FAQs
Is It SAFE?!
You’re not alone.
Many people wonder if Vaseline is really safe but not to worry.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using Vaseline® to
- Relieve dry skin
- Help injured skin heal
- Prevent chafing
- Treat diaper rash
- Rehydrate nails
They officially recommend using Vaseline to minimise and reduce scars too.
And personally I have sensitive skin and have been using Vaseline for decades (+25 years).
It really works wonders for me and I would say it’s VERY safe to use.
Dos & Don’ts of Vaseline
Here’s a couple of tips on using Vaseline safely.
Dos
(1) Use cotton swabs, mini spatulas or spoons to scoop Vaseline out (not fingers)
– This helps avoid bacteria/sebum going into the pot – keep it as clean as possible.
(2) Store it in a cool/dry place and use up the pot as quickly as possible
– Once opened, Vaseline gets oxidised and with time it becomes yellowish. If you see that happening, simply scrape the old part out and use fresher Vaseline underneath.
Don’ts
(1) Stop using if your skin feels irritated
(2) Don’t sunbathe with Vaseline on
– when Vaseline is exposed to sunlight, it can burn the skin
(3) Don’t use Vaseline on acne
– if you have oily skin, you also want to be careful to not use too much
