Most Japanese sunscreens not only protect your skin from the sun but also provide skincare effects too.
Japanese sunscreen = sun protection + skincare
Take advantage of J-Beauty’s cutting edge technology to protect your skin and prevent premature ageing!
You will see the 5 special benefits below when you switch to Japanese sunscreens:
High Quality
The beauty industry in Japan is enormous.
About 250 domestic brands are competing followed by the global players like Shiseido and SK-ll.
This means each brand MUST come out with their VERY best to survive and thrive.
It’s a tough market, extremely competitive environment. As a result, Japan developed cutting edge science and technology to innovate world-class skincare products, including sunscreens.
Excellent Texture
One of the amazing features of Japanese sunscreens is the lightness.
Japanese brands use their latest skincare technology to bring comfort to your skin while protecting.
Since it’s lightweight, it’s easy to remove, and you don’t need to worry about getting breakouts or acne because of wearing sunscreen all day every day.
And of course, you see NO WHITE CAST! You can forget about this problem with Japanese sunscreens.
Skincare Effect
This is another beautiful feature of Japanese sunscreen – you can do skincare with sunscreen.
Japanese brands think of other needs that consumers may have.
They think of consumers’ general skin concerns like dry skin, sensitive skin, acne etc. and innovate formulas to prevent those troubles.
Your Skin Type Covered
With over 250 local skincare brands in Japan, you will find a sunscreen that suits YOUR skin needs. Plus, every sunscreen has its unique features. You will just have to look for what’s right for you 😉
Whether you have sensitive skin, dry skin or acne-prone skin, Japanese sunscreens got you.
Incredibly Affordable
You can buy most Japanese sunscreens for $10 – $20. Some are even below $10 in drugstores, and yet they work like a charm on your skin.
Considering the quality and all the skin-friendly features, it is a bargain.
How To Choose Japanese Sunscreens for Your Skin Type
credit: www.kanebo-cosmetics.jp/allie/
You might feel intimidated seeing the packaging in Japanese, but not to worry! I will break everything down for you in this article.
There are only a few things you need to know, and it’s pretty easy.
Make sure you check the following 3 points:
1 ) SPF / PA
Choose the right SPF and PA level by season and activity.
2 ) Texture
Choose the texture by occasion and your skin type.
3 ) Blocking or absorbing
Are Ingredients sun blocking (physical sunblock) or absorbing (chemical sunscreen)?
Let’s go through each process in detail now:
#1 SPF / PF
Choose the right SPF and PA.
You will see those 2 metrics on Japanese sunscreen labels.
- SPF (10 – 50)
- PA (+ – ++++)
Those metrics indicate the strength of the sun protection you can get from the sunscreen.
It’s important to understand how to read those two metrics so you can find the right one that suits your needs.
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) Protect from sunburn |
The number indicates the level of protection you get from UVB rays. It has a scale of 10 – 50+. In other words, it shows how much time it takes before your skin turns red due to UVB. If it’s 10, in no time your skin will most likely turn red. The higher the number is, the longer you can protect your skin from sunburn. |
PA (Protection Grade of UVA) Protect from premature ageing of the skin |
The number of + signs indicates the level of protection you get from UVA rays. It has a scale of + – ++++. In other words, it shows how much time it takes before your skin turns dark due to UVA. If it’s a +, in no time your skin will soon turn dark. The more + it has, the less likely your skin turns dark and premature.
|
Note: UVB and UVA are the two types of ultraviolet rays in sunlight that reach the earth’s surface.
* UVA – penetrates more deeply into the skin and plays a greater role in premature skin ageing including wrinkles (photoaging)
* UVB – responsible for sunburn and plays the greatest role in causing cancers
There are about 500 times more UVA rays in sunlight than UVB rays.
So it is essential to choose a sunscreen that protects you from not only UVB (check SPF) but also UVA (check +).
Here’s a guideline when choosing the strength:
- Going out for about an hour (general shopping, walking, commuting etc.)
→ SPF 10 – 30 / PA ++ – +++
- Leisure under the sun, on the beach (out between 10 am – 5 pm, summertime)
→ SPF 30 – 50 / PA ++++
It is helpful to remember this too:
The higher the number, the more protection, but the burden on the skin will also increase.
So I recommend you have both types.
One for daily use and one for leisure / summertime.
#2 Texture
Choose the texture by the occasion and your skin type.
There are mainly 5 different types of texture in Japanese sunscreens. You can choose which type based on your needs.
Milk
- Smooth on the skin, easy to spread and not-sticky
- Most are non-chemical, gentle on the skin
→ Perfect for face and sensitive skin
Cream
- Moisturising
- Resistant to water (waterproof)
→ Perfect for swimming outdoors and other leisure activities under the sun
Gel / Essence
- Feels light, easy to pat
- Less likely to get white cast
→ Perfect if you’re mainly looking for ease of use and lightness
Mist spray
- Very light, easy to apply and remove
- Can be used for areas that are difficult to reach (hair, scalp etc.)
→ Perfect for touch-ups and hair & scalp
Powder
- Very light, easy to apply and remove
- Can be used as a foundation
→ Perfect for touch-ups, quick walks & shopping
#3 UV Reflecting or Absorbing
Are Ingredients sun reflecting (physical sunblock) or absorbing (chemical sunscreen)?
There are two main types of sunscreen – physical or chemical.
It’s just two different ways to block the sunlight.
Both have their own unique properties and benefits in terms of protecting the skin from UV rays.
Physical sunscreen
- Uses minerals that sit on top of the skin and reflect away UV rays
- More moisturising than chemical sunscreen
- Can appear a little greasy on the skin
→ A better option for sensitive skin as it doesn’t absorb directly into the skin.
Chemical sunscreen
- Uses ingredients that absorb and transform UV rays to heat
- Usually lightweight and doesn’t leave a white cast.
- Tends to be more water/sweat resistant
→ best for outdoor activities and ideal for most skin types
Bear in mind that most sunscreens you find in your local pharmacy or drugstore are chemical sunscreens. But if you have sensitive skin, try to look for a physical sunscreen.

Japanese sunscreens are supreme! Thanks so much for this inspiring post 🙂 definitely will buy one of your recommendations!!
I’ve got to say I love this blog – the layout and everything 🙂 it is so unique and genuine, love it!!
Hello hello! This was a really informative article – I was wondering if you could clarify what you meant by ‘the higher the number, the greater the protection, but the greater the burden on the skin’ at the beginning of your article. Just wanted to clarify what you meant by burden, and how to counteract that. 🙂 Thanks again for the great review and recommendations!
Hi Marella – lovely to hear from you 🙂!
SPF 50 is stronger than SPF 10, 20, or 30 in terms of protection. So if you need strong protection, you should go for SPF 30+. With SPF10, 20, it would protect the skin for a short while in a mild way – you might get tanned a little bit unless you keep re-applying it a few times throughout the day.
Think this way, if a sunscreen can protect you from the skin very well, it means the product has some strong ingredients to make that happen. It’s great that we can avoid getting tanned but at the same time, it can be quite straining for the skin since the ingredients are very potent (it’s like normal medicines – strong medicines are good but they can upset the stomach). What we need to do when wearing high SPF sunscreens is to make sure you wash your face properly at night and moisturise well. If you do good night time skincare, wearing high SPF sunscreens are not a problem!
Hope this helps ❤️
